Veteran Italian chef Antonio Carluccio has hit out at supermarket pasta and sauces, saying the products are a ‘bit of a con’.

Carluccio, 77, known for his restaurant chain, has accused the supermarkets of fooling shoppers into paying too much for poor-quality items.

Fresh pasta being sold in the supermarkets is packaged in a way to make it weigh more, he claimed, and as a result, it costs more.

Italian sauces are also made from mediocre ingredients with too much sugar added, the founder of the Carluccio’s chain claimed.

Supermarket accountants were putting cost-cutting measures over quality products, he said.

Carluccio opened his first food store in 1991 and his first restaurant in 1999.

He has restaurants in the UK, Ireland and Dubai.

He has written 17 books on Italian food.
