AC Creamery of California is recalling Manila Sky Purple Yumm Ice Cream because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product, but listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria, can take up to 70 days to appear.

The recalled product is Manila Sky Purple Yumm Ice Cream in a 16 ounce paper cup, marked with the expiration date of March 05, 2018 on the bottom. It was distributed nationwide in retail stores and at these and other events: Florida Food & Lodging Show, Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture, and California State University Pilipino American Student Association (CSUF PASA) Friendship Games.

The FDA found samples that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes in the contract manufacturer’s facility (Dr. Bob’s of Upland, LLC) and in the finished product of another company’s brand. That brand was not named. And the contract manufacturer recalled all ice cream products made this year.

If you purchased this product, do not eat it. Throw it away in a sealed or double bagged container, or take it back to the place of purchase for a refund. Then clean out your freezer with a mild bleach solution to kill any remaining bacteria. Listeria bacteria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, and freezing does not kill it.

If you ate any of this recalled product, watch yourself for the symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes food poisoning for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women may only have a mild illness similar to the flu if they contract listeriosis, but this illness can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
