Turkey’s Tunceli Province is located in the middle of the Eastern Anatolia Region; studies are underway there to increase organic mulberry production.

Organic farming trials began in the Cemizgezek district. On the back of the trials, growers found suitable production techniques, and together with organic farming certification they are able to benefit from various government incentives. In this framework, in the village of Ulukale, organic mulberry production is continuing to increase. The village dominates in Turkey’s mulberry production.

From the Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry, Kamil Karatas said that contracts have been signed concerning organic certification and inspections are being carried out at growers. ''Mulberries grown in Ulukale are known for their bright white colour and have a good reputation for fruit pulping and molasses.’’

Ulukale is in an isolated location away from environmental pollution, which makes it ideal for organic growing. No chemical fertilizers are being used in the mulberry production there.

Mulberry farming in Ulukale has been going on for centuries and the growers have been demanding organic certification for their fruit. ‘’Organic certification is not only limited to production, but the whole chain, including the drying process is checked. For sample analysis, products are sent to accredited laboratories. We award our manufacturers the organic farming certificate accordingly,’’  said Karatas.

''Certificate hugely important’’
Karatas emphasises the importance of become certified organic for growers, ''Organic inspection and certification documents the quality of the produce in the region and provides a number of advantages. Having an organic certificate allows growers to get better prices in the market and provides the opportunity to export. Moreover those growing organic mulberries in 2016 will be given 70TL in support per decare.’’
