The Malaysian Kwong Wah Yit Poh reported on July 10th that the vice-secretary-general of the Malaysian Department of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry pointed out in June that the Malaysian and Chinese governments had successful negotiations on the issue of whole durian export from Malaysia to China. Malaysia currently exports refrigerated pieces of durian to China, but not whole durian. Malaysia expects to obtain Chinese import permission for whole durian in 2019.

The president of the Malaysian Chinese Tourism Industry Association stated that the Malaysian "durian trip" finds much appreciation with Chinese consumers. Popular durian trip destinations include Penang and Kuala Lumpur. "Even if Chinese tourists did not book a durian trip, many of them visit Malaysia during one of the durian 'festivals' and sample our delicious durian."
