Due to the magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Hokkaido and the shortage of vegetables from northern Japan, due to the impact of typhoons, imported vegetables began to appear on the market as substitutes. In the Central Wholesale Market in Tokyo, the cumulative stock of carrots produced in China in early September reached 2.8 times that of the same period of the previous year, and onions also increased by 60%. In supermarkets and other shops, some products have also seen the trend of Chinese production replacing of Japanese production.

At the same time, due to the power outage caused by the earthquake in Hokkaido, the vegetable sorting plant was shut down, and the amount of carrots produced in Hokkaido decreased by 30%. Out-of-stocks have led to a surge in demand for imported products.

At the Central Wholesale Market in Tokyo, the amount of Chinese carrots increased to 81 tons in early September, much higher than the 29 tons in the same period last year. The average wholesale price in China is 88 yen per kilogram, which is 20% higher than the same period last year. However, it is still much cheaper than Hokkaido, which has grown by 90%, year-on-year, and reached 153 yen. In the same period last year, the imported products on the wholesale market only accounted for 1% of , but now have increased to 4%.

The amount of Chinese-made onions in the Central Wholesale Market in Tokyo also reached 218 tons, a year-on-year increase of 60%. The amount of green onions produced in China was 63 tons, and the import volume increased by 50%. At present, Japan's main green onion production area is Aomori Prefecture, but "Typhoon No. 21 blew down the green onions", and the total purchase volume of the market has decreased by 20%.
