In the first half of the year, carrots increased in price the most in St Petersburg, by 51%, as the head of the city department of the Federal Antimonopoly Service, Vadim Vladimirov, reported on Wednesday 27 July.

In July, the prices for white cabbage increased 43%, potatoes 36%, onions 20% and apples 19%. The FAS associate the price increases with the growth of the dollar, tied to global prices and high volatility in commodity markets.

On the 4th July, President Putin signed a law on trade, which states that the payments that the retailers levy from wholesalers must be limited to 5% of the purchase price. This amount includes bonuses for volume purchases, advertising, marketing and other services. Earlier the FAS found that Lenta and Perekrestok imposed charges on goods included in contracts for the provision of marketing services on suppliers. Lenta was fined 2 million roubles for this, Perekrestok was fined 3 million. The retailers are challenging this decision in court.
