“Generally speaking, Hainan pineapples come to the market between February and May, which is earlier than Taiwan pineapples, but similar to Xuwen pineapples. Due to the temperature and geographical factors, Hainan pineapples are sweeter than those from Xuwen, therefore they are widely used for fresh consumption. The sluggish sales of Xuwen pineapple are mainly caused by the cold wave weather, which resulted in a relatively lower quality level of their pineapples. "At present, Hainan pineapple supply is nearly at the end of the season, and their purchase price is around 1.6-2 Yuan / kg. The popular Hainan pineapple varieties in the current fruit market are Tainong 16 and 17, which can supply the market from April until July. Tainong 17 is what we know as Taiwan diamond pineapple variety, they are large in size and have fleshy and juicy tastes, which makes them a good choice both for fresh consumption and juice making, while Tainong 16 has more delicate flesh compared with Tainong 17 and they contain nearly no crude fiber. Moreover, their sugar content is very high, and the regular ripe fruits can reach a sugar content of 18. Therefore, their purchase price is higher than regular pineapples, reaching 4-5 Yuan per kilo.”
As of April, Taiwan comes into its rainy season, therefore the yields of top quality Taiwan pineapples diminish. At the same time, the yields of Hainan pineapples start to increase, as the temperature in this province gradually increases and its daily average temperature is around 30 degrees, which offers a good growing environment.
