Data from Ele.me shows that cherry sales on Valentine's Day in Jinan increased by 177% in comparison with the same period last year. The trade in cherries flourished, whether it was in giant supermarkets or small fruit vendors. The price of cherries is currently around 60-90 yuan [8.87-13.30 USD] per 0.5 kg.

Imported cherries usually enter the Chinese market in late October, and their supply lasts until February in the subsequent year. Sales flourish in particular around Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019]. Imported cherries are a darker red than domestic cherries, and their fruit is bigger, firmer, and juicier.

Cherries start to ripen in the northern hemisphere around May, but when it is winter in the north, the cherries begin to ripen in the southern hemisphere. It is therefore not surprising that China is the largest export market for Chilean cherries. Around 80%-90% of the Chilean cherry export is destined for the Chinese market.
