The Netherlands is responsible for almost one-third of Europe’s total production of French fries and other frozen potato dishes, according to the national statistics office CBS.

This means the Netherlands is Europe’s leading seller of frozen potato products. The Dutch themselves ate the equivalent of 18 kilos of frozen French fries per person last year, the CBS said.

In 2013, the Dutch processed 1.4 billion kilos of potato into frozen products with a value of €1.1bn.

Of this, 87% is exported, mainly to Britain, Germany and France. Saudi Arabia and Brazil are fourth and fifth in the list of Dutch potato eaters.
