If you’re a producer trying to improve the quantity and quality of your produce by following efficient and sustainable farming practices, but also feeling the pressure of the global economic state, growing population demand and increased environmental constraints, you’re not alone.

Farmers around the globe are discovering that following the recipe of by-gone years no longer meets the demands of modern agriculture; they have been discovering the merit of using more modern practices.

The Near Differential Vegetative Index (NDVI) service forms one of the pillars of Farmsecure Agri Science’s Precision Agriculture foundation which encompasses every speciality of farm management, i.e. soil classification and mapping, new orchard establishment, crop nutrition, irrigation and horticultural advice. The NDVI service provides a means to isolate underperforming areas in orchards and offers expert advice aimed at improving orchard uniformity and productivity to maximize yields.

NDVI is not a new technology as it was developed in the early 80s; the application thereof in agriculture is however a modern practice which Farmsecure is utilising in their quest to reach sustainability in agriculture. The two phases of the process are:

Phase 1 – Physical scanning and map compilation

The orchard is scanned using NDVI scanners via airplane.

The NDVI map indicates the zones of variation. This can be used as indicator for zones to sample leaves and soil.

Phase 2 – In-depth service to improve uniformity

The Farmsecure Agri Science consultant together with the farmer investigate the cause of variation; whether it is a physical, chemical or biological limitation.

The consultant, again working with the farmer, devises an action plan to uplift the weaker zones.

Farmsecure Agri Science presents the farmer with a scientific and practical report, outlining all actions to be taken and, if necessary, refers them to applicable specialists within Farmsecure Agri Science.

All NDVI data is recorded in a database for future use. This will serve as reference for future risk mitigation.

This all-accommodating Farmsecure Agri Science NDVI service was developed to allow producers to take a step back, look at their farm in its totality and take action in order to ensure that it reaches its full potential.

Identifying risk areas, improving their performance and storing data are steps that can be taken towards a more profitable and prospering future. After all, Farmsecure Agri Science believes that sustainability starts with good advice.
