North American dairy company Agropur plans to invest over $100m at its Luxemburg whey processing facility in Wisconsin as part of strategy to enhance its production capacity.

The investment will be focused on technology and wastewater treatment system.

Agropur US cheese business unit president Doug Simon said: "We are certainly very excited about this investment in the future of the Wisconsin dairy industry, as it provides employment opportunities for our employees and a stable home for milk produced in the area."

The project is slated to be completed in 2014.

Founded in 1938, Agropur operates 25 plants across Canada and the US. Four of the seven plants across the US are located in Wisconsin.

With 5,700 employees, the dairy company processes around seven billion pounds of milk per year.
