EFSA takes PET safety stance

The opinions were adopted by EFSA’s Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF), and assess a total of 10 recycling processes. For all three opinions, the panel concluded that recycling processes would not give rise to safety concerns if the proportion of PET from non-food consumer applications did not exceed 5%, and the processes were“operated under well-defined conditions”.

The opinions are the first in a series to be issued on recycled plastic materials for use in food over the next 18 months. Once complete, the series will form the basis for decisions regarding the authorisation of the evaluated processes by the European Commission and Member States.
