Johnny Rockets, a Southern California-based burger chain, has been sold to private equity firm Sun Capital Partners for an undisclosed amount.

Founded in 1986, Johnny Rockets currently has about 300 outlets in 30 states and 16 countries.

Johnny Rockets chief executive John Fuller said Sun Capital intends to expand the chain and is looking all possible ways to cut costs.

Florida-based Sun Capital also owns Boston Market, Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill; Bar Louie; Fazoli's; Restaurants Unlimited; Garden Fresh Restaurant; Friendly's Ice Cream; and a restaurant chain in the Netherlands called La Place.

Fuller added that, over the next 12 months, Johnny Rockets plans to open 60 new outlets, including 40 outside of the US.
