Diageo has praised New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for introducing new drunk driving regulations in the state to keep a check on repeated alcohol and drug related driving convictions.

The new Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) regulations are designed to track the record of all those drivers who apply to renew their licenses after revocation. DMV can permanently cancel the licenses of offenders who were caught repeatedly for drunk driving.

For drivers caught under alcohol-related offense, the DMV can attach an interlock device to the car's ignition system, asking drivers to blow into the device every time to start the engine. If alcohol is detected, the car will not start.

Diageo North America state government relations senior director Dwayne Kratt said they appreciate the Governor's efforts for coming up with such initiatives to fight against drunk driving in the state.

"Across the country, drunk driving statistics have shown milestone improvement over the past several years. However in New York, alcohol-related injurious crashes involving a driver with three or more alcohol-related driving convictions are on the rise," Kratt added.

"This regulation proves that officials are taking the issue seriously. While there is still much work to be done, these improvements show that when law enforcement, the justice system, legislators, and the industry unite behind this critical issue, we can make a real difference."
