McDonald’sThe numbers are out for 2013 and the verdict is in: More people make purchases under the golden arches than anywhere else.

McDonald’s beat out such behemoth’s as Wal-Mart, Walgreen’s, and Target to stake its claim as the country’s most visited retail business.

And the numbers behind it are staggering. In March, 49 percent of Americans over 14 years old ate at McDonald’s.

That figure comes out of a study from Placed Insights that asked 70,000 people about where they’d recently spent their money.

Despite the report, the McDonald’s corporation is worried about slumping numbers.

Though the fast food titan saw a gain in profits in Q1, they say one measure of their sales fell by one percent.

Revenue rose an equal amount, one percent, to hit $6.6 billion during the quarter.

Analysts blame the failure of the chain’s once-mighty Dollar Menu to boost sales and point to edge out look-a-like competition from rivals like Burger King and Wendy’s.

Burger King, for instance, now offers its Whopper Junior for $1.29.

Still, the fact that so many of us ate at the nearly 60-year-old burger joint is impressive.

The same study showed that half as many Americans, one-fourth of those over, made purchases at Burger King in March. And the McDonald's rival's U.S. and Canada sales dropped three percent since the end of 2012.

McDonald’s Corporation boasts around 14,000 U.S. stores.
