Usually, we eat dried daylily. But there are many places, especially the origin of daylily, some people like fresh, like to eat fresh daylily. However, fresh is not necessarily good and safe. This is because there is a toxin in the daylily, which may cause food poisoning after eating.

Alkaloid hiding in daylily

Both flowers and roots of daylily contain a poisonous alkaloid, which is usually thought to be colchicine.

Colchicine, a substance that many people are familiar , can inhibit cell mitosis process, so that chromosomes can stay in the metaphase of division, which is very common in Cytology and Breeding, it also has the effect of anti-inflammatory, is a common drug for the treatment of gout and other diseases.

A recent study indicates that alkaloids in daylily are not colchicine. The author collected more than 150 samples of edible daylily and detected colchicine, but found another alkaloid similar to colchicine.

The author believes that the alkaloids in daylily are colchicine, this misjudgement may be caused by the undeveloped detection conditions.

However, whether the alkaloid in daylily is colchicine or not, the fact that it can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal irritation symptoms is beyond all doubt, because poisoning after eating fresh daylily is not rare.
