Potato prices at the auction yard in Phuentsholing have dropped more than 7 times since last year, and this has affected farmers to the point they cannot transport their potatoes due to not being able to meet the transportation cost.

Dorji, a potato grower, said last year he sold 160 bags of potatoes for Nu 450,000 whilst this year they have sold 100 bags for only Nu 170,000.

Another problem potato growers are facing is the delay in receiving payment and the Food Corporation of Bhutan (FCB) not providing accurate information.

It is argued that it is FCB’s responsibility to provide potato farmers with clear information on what type of potatoes to bring during which month.

Compared to last few months, prices this month have increased a bit, as it is a season for potato seeds. The current price is Nu 25 a kg for medium size, which is considered the best variety, and Nu 21 for bigger size. The smaller size potatoes get only Nu 5.
