The Interprofessional Association for Melons and Watermelons of Castile-La Mancha confirmed the upward trend in prices for both products in early September, with increases of up to 12 cents per kilo in the case of Extra category melons, which stand at 0.40 Euro/kilo. This has been revealed in a press release by the members of the Association, which held their eighth meeting in the town of Llanos del Caudillo.

The other melon categories have also registered price increases; the first class reached 0.30 Euro/kilo, an increase of 9 cents, while the second class stands at 0.20 Euro/kilo, an increase of 5 cents compared to the previous week.

Watermelons have also become more expensive, with a price of 0.33 Euro/kilo for first class black seedless (+3 cents), 0.25 Euro for second class black seedless (+3 cents), 0.24 Euro for first class black with seeds (+2 cents), 0.33 Euro for the first class white (+4 cents) and 0.25 Euro for the second class white (+3 cents).

Members of the Association have attributed the increase in prices to strong demand and reduced supply during these first few days of September.
They have also stressed the need to seek new export channels and the importance of carrying out promotional campaigns to boost consumption of both fruits.
