Located at Hanwella, Colombo, this is the company's ninth chilling centre and the first solar powered milk chilling facility in Sri Lanka.

The facility features 32 solar panels with a 3.24 kW capacity and is expected to save nearly 22,000 kW every year.

To process milk into fresh dairy products that are sold under Anchor Newdale brand, Fonterra collects milk from a network of 4,000 dairy farmers in the country.

Sri Lanka Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka was quoted by DailyFT as saying, "The Government is focussed on growing the Sri Lankan dairy industry as well as energy sustainability and it is encouraging to see companies like Fonterra investing in modern technology and systems to help conserve energy and further develop milk collection facilities."

Fonterra Brands Sri Lanka managing director Leon Clement said that the company has been collecting fresh milk in Sri Lanka for over 15 years.

"This is a model project and we are now exploring the possibility of installing this technology across more of our chilling centers across the country," Clement added.

Fonterra has chilling centers in the districts of Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, Kurunegala, Puttalam and Matale.
