Sales at stores that have been open at least a year came in more than a full percent below what analysts expected amid discounts to entice shoppers.

The chain, which runs nearly 650 stores around the world, including six in Massachusetts, also reported first-quarter results for fiscal 2014. Net income was $425 million, or 96 cents per share, vs. $416 million, or 95 cents, a year ago.
