Van Diemen's Land (VDL), a Tasmanian dairy firm, has received an approval from the deputy premier Bryan Green for a dairy expansion at Woolnorth in the far North West.

The investment would create about 65 jobs in the farm development stage and add 260 new jobs across the region once the farms enter operations.

The project would make Woolnorth one of the largest grass-feed dairy operations in the world and add $100m to the local economy every year.

Green said that this is a huge vote of confidence in the future of Tasmania's dairy industry and the Circular Head region.

"The dairy industry is one of the State's key economic drivers and demonstrates the Van Diemen's Land Company's commitment to the sector, he added.

"The company will be seeking to invest more than $122 million in the expansion."

VDL's expansion plans include the enlarging of 11 of the 12 existing dairy units, the development of three new dairy units on current beef operations, the development of six new diary units on existing Heifer operations and the development of two new dairy units from land.

With this project, the company will have 23 dairy farms on the property.

Green said the Woolnorth expansion would strengthen the North-West's standing as one of Australia's major dairy producing regions.

Established in 1825, VDL is located in the picturesque northwest of Tasmania, and is one of Australia's oldest companies. It currently runs around 30,000 dairy stock.
