304 million The number of champagne bottles which were sold worldwide in 2013. $16 billion The cash bid that Japanese drinks group Suntory made for its US rival Beam. It's likely to be completed, and if so investors in the maker of Jim Beam and Canadian Club liquor will get $83.50 per share; a whole 25% above Beam’s closing price on 10 January.

Britian's largest chain grocer admitted that these poor figures could result in profits coming in by up to £150 million below expectations set down just one month ago. The performance from Tesco compares to a 0.2% rise in like-for-like sales for rival Sainsbury's in the 14 weeks to January 4, with Aldi, Lidl, the Co-op and Waitrose also enjoying a rise in sales during the vital festive trading period.
