Algerian Minister of Agriculture Abdelwahab Nouri and his Portuguese counterpart Assuncao Cristas signed on Thursday in Algiers four cooperation agreements in agriculture, reports APS news agency.

"These agreements aim to step up bilateral cooperation between the two countries in agriculture," APS quoted Nouri as saying.

Cristas said her visit to Algeria is motivated by the willingness of Portugal to "develop a sustainable and strong partnership with Algeria ahead of building sustainable long-term projects."

The signing of these agreements was part of the Algeria- Portuguese Forum on agriculture and agribusiness held in Algiers Thursday.

The Portuguese Agriculture Minister Assuncao Cristas arrived Wednesday in Algiers with a large delegation of businessmen to take part in the first Agriculture and Food Security Ministerial Conference of the 5+5 Dialogue, which brought together Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Mauritania for the southern shore of the Mediterranean, and Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Malta for the northern shore.

This conference, which was held Thursday in Algiers, recommended the installation of an observatory for food security, which will allow 10 countries of the western Mediterranean to exchange information on their agricultural markets.
