Vietnam has beaten Thailand and Cambodia to win a contract to supply 500,000 tons of rice to the Philippines between December 2013 and March 2014, according to Truong Thanh Phong, Chairman of Vietnam Food Association.

Combined with commercial contracts of around 400,000 tons of rice, the amount of rice for delivery in first quarter of 2014 has risen to around 700,000 tons.

Supply of rice is expected to be ensured as winter-spring rice crop will be ready for harvesting by that time.

Mr. Phong also said that rice exports will merely touch 6.6-6.7 million tons this year, around 1 million tons less than in 2012.
