The Commercial Office (OCEX) of Peru in New Delhi reported that Peruvian avocados will be able to ma…The Commercial Office (OCEX) of Peru in New Delhi reported that Peruvian avocados will be able to make their entry into India from August this year, after the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Asian nation notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) what the new phytosanitary requirements will be for the importation of these fruits (Persea americana) from Peru intended for consumption in India.
In this regard, Peruvian avocados may be exported to the Indian market simply by complying with the requirement of being free of Stenoma catenifer and coming from production places where the pest has not been detected.
The notice basically states that the Ministry of Agriculture of India has eliminated the phytosanitary requirements previously established for fruit flies (Anastrepha fraterculus) and for the avocado sunblotch viroid, as well as for the fumigation treatment with methyl bromide, which used to be mandatory.
This achievement is the result of joint work between the OCEX of New Delhi and the National Agricultural Health Service of Peru (SENASA), which aimed to get the phytosanitary authority of India to introduce more flexible phytosanitary requirements to make it possible for Peru to export avocados to this important destination.
