Patna is the second largest city in eastern India after Kolkata; high temperatures and humidity there have led to a good output of vegetables, and subsequently a sharp decline in prices.

Sources in the city's retail vegetable markets confirmed that in the last few days there has been a significant drop of 30%-50% in the prices of most vegetables. They say the prices will decline further in the coming days.

The decrease in prices is significant. Sponge Gourd (nenua) is now selling at Rs 10 per kg against Rs 20 per kg earlier. Lady finger (bhindi) and bottle gourd (kaddu) are available for Rs 6-10 per kg, down from Rs 20 per kilogram some days back. Onions are selling at Rs 16 per kilogram against Rs 20 last week. Pointed gourd (parwal) is priced at Rs 20 per kilogram, a reduction of Rs 3-5 per kilogram, said Amit Kumar, a vegetable vendor at Anta Ghat.

"Customers now prefer nenua and kaddu mostly. This is because of their price and their nutrient value," said Sharmanand Ray, another vendor at Anta Ghat.

Spinach (palak) and Amaranth leaves (laal saag) are slightly expensive at Rs 20. "Spinach and Amaranth leaves tend to burn due to rays of the sun in summer. This is why their price is slightly more than other vegetables," said another vendor, Sushila.
