Spanish exporters will have to adapt to the new German Packaging Law, since the sale in Germany of products whose packaging has not been correctly registered will be prohibited from January 2019. The new German Packaging Law (VerpackG) was published on July 5, 2017. Most of its regulations will take effect on January 1, 2019 and will replace the current regulations.

The most important addition is the obligation to register in the new Central Register of Packers (Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister). Periodic declarations will have to be presented both to this Central Register and to a dual system for the collection and treatment of containers.

This new procedure will ensure greater control and total transparency for all the containers that are put into circulation in Germany. The data will be crossed, since it will also be compulsory for the dual systems to declare the quantities of containers they manage to the Central Register. This new transparency will be reflected in the publication of the list of companies registered in the "Verpackungsregister".

So far, many Spanish companies have ignored their obligation to declare their packaging. This is no longer an option, since supervision and control will be carried out in a centralized manner. Those failing to adhere to the regulations won't be allowed to sell their products in Germany.

The German Chamber of Commerce for Spain is offering advice and services for the correct management of packaging in the German market. More information at www.ahk.es.
