Greek fruit producers, predominantly apple growers, have been sending trial fruit shipments to India following a request they made in 2015 to expand to the Asian market.  The approval of the Indian Agricultural Ministry was conveyed to its Greek counterpart through Vassilis Skronias, plenipotentiary minister of Economic and Commercial affairs at the Greek embassy in New Delhi.

The Indian government is interested in Greek apples and kiwi fruit “on a permanent basis”, pending a trial of at least 8 to 10 trial shipments, under specified conditions.

Giorgos Polychronakis, consultant to the Federation of Greek Export Businesses of Fruit, Vegetables, and Juices Incofruit-Hellas, has stated that other agreements were pending for the export of Greek prunes, cherries and citrus fruit.

Aside from this, the Ambassador of Greece to India, Panos Kalogeropoulos, in collaboration with the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) invited Indian Companies to explore business opportunities in Greece.

Kalogeropoulos spoke extensively on the rebound of the Greek economy and in keeping with this resurgence he sent an open invitation to Indian companies to expand their business horizons by forging new alliances in the form of new technology, business collaboration and exchange of ideas in the sectors of energy, food and agriculture, life sciences, ICT, logistics and tourism among others, with Greek counterparts.

Greekcitytimes.com reported on Kalogeropoulos also announcing that India will be the special ‘Honoured Nation’ at the Thessaloniki International Fair 2019 Greece.
