Research carried out by the Research Unit of the Egyptian Chamber of Commerce confirmed that fruit and vegetable prices in Egypt recorded a slight decrease last week.

The Unit confirmed that the price of a kilo of tomatoes fell from five pounds* per kilo to 2.5 pounds per kilo, while that of green peppers fell to 5 pounds per kilo, after having reached 7 pounds. It was also confirmed that the prices of canned goods remained stable. Meanwhile, the price of potatoes fell to one pound and a half per kilo after having reached three and a half pounds per kilo.

Oranges were the only item whose price increased, reaching 6 pounds per kilo, mostly as a result of increased demand for them near the end of the winter.

Data for this week, however, show that the prices of most products have increased again. This, according to traders, is the result of supply shortages in the market, although traders expect them to fall again in the coming days, after the weather has improved.
