According to Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam set a 300, 000 metric tonnes of tilapia production target up to 2020, among which 50—60% should meet the demand of process and export.

It’s reported that the purpose of the set target was to propel tilapia farming moving further towards stable industry growth, and to meet import demand and the requirement of product diversity. The plan would also promote high-quality fry breeding and provide more job opportunities.

The whole tilapia farming areas would reach 33, 000 hectares based on the plan, while net cage farming in rivers and lakes would amount to 1, 500, 000 hectares. The total production would be 300, 000 metric tonnes, among which 50—60% would be processed and exported, which would directly and indirectly solve the job problems of 540, 000 and 5, 000 people respectively. Up to 2030, the farming area would reach 40, 000 hectares, net cage 1, 800, 000 cubic meters with a production of 400, 000 tonnes, among which 45—50% would be exported.

It’s reported that the target was designated to 7 ecological zones, including north mountain area, north flat area, middle-north area, middle-south area, western provinces, southeastern region and southwestern region. Blue tilapia, crossbreeding of and Red Tilmpa are the three main species to be farmed.
