Mango prices in Panaji, Goa, like in most of India, have been high for weeks, yet as the last batch of mangoes enters local markets, the prices have nosedived. Mancurad mangoes, for instance, are going at Rs300 a dozen, while 12 Alphonso mangoes currently sell for Rs200.

“This, the final batch of local mangoes, has come to the market in loads. Hence, they are going so cheap,” said Imam Kasim, a fruiterer in the Panaji market.

Another vendor, Sadiq Mokashi, said that although the market is currently dominated by Alphonso and Mancurad mangoes, there might not be any in June. “Hence, we are pushing sales,” he added.

Other lesser sought-after varieties, like Pairi , Totapuri and Dussehri will replace the hugely popular Mancurad sometime next month. Depending on the supply of these, the fruit’s rates might probably increase.

Chausa and Langda from Uttar Pradesh; Mallika, Benisha, Baygan Palli and Bottle mango from Bengaluru; and Alphonsos from Ratnagiri are also likely to flood the markets within a fortnight.

Despite the golden fruit being up for grabs, vendors lamented that there have been few takers.
