The Spanish citrus season is coming to an end. There are still some small volumes coming in, but not much can be found on the market. Looking back at the season, William Willems of Central Fruit from Brussels is satisfied. "We had a very good season for our Cibel Citrus, in terms of volume, price and quality. We are talking about both leaf clementines and the oranges."

Less volumes from South Africa
At the moment there is a shortage of citrus and the prices are higher than usual. "We will try and bridge our way to South Africa for another two or three weeks," continues William. "It won't be easy with the smaller availability, but we will do our best. The South Africans will be here before you know it. The noises from overseas are moderately optimistic. Not too much volume is expected, so this is a good sign for a brand like Cibel. Surplus is never good for a brand, with a smaller volume we are better able to define ourselves."

Perfect connection almost impossible

There has been a shortage in the switch between the Spanish and South African season before. "The situation is different every year, although they are trying to connect the seasons as best as possible. Perfectly connecting two continents would be the ideal situation, but that's almost impossible. Sometimes there is too much Spanish product, this year there isn't enough. There will always be a shortage or oversupply."
