summary:The US has consulted the World Trade Organization (WTO over India's restrictions on various US agricultural products, including poultry meat and chicken eggs. The restrictions are discriminatory and violate WTO obligations....

This move comes after the consultation held between the two countries failed.

In March, US sought for formal consultations with India over this issue. However, the consultation, which were held between 16-17 April, ended without a resolution of the problem.

India had imposed restrictions due to outbreaks of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI), the only kind of avian influenza found in the US since 2004. However, according to US officials the international guidelines and science did not support the restrictions imposed by India.

US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said that the US agriculture industry maintains highest standards of safety and is confident the WTO will agree that there is no justification for India's restrictions on US shipments.
