On June 12, 2013, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) announced a downgrade of the artificial sweetener sucralose from “Safe” to “Caution.” The food safety watchdog group publishes a Chemical Cuisine guide containing safety ratings of food additives. The action was taken based on recent studies questioning the safety of the sweetener’s use. Sucralose is commonly known by the brand name Splenda.

Sweeteners, as a functional class, are generally included in the International Food Additive Database.
