The European plums imported to the Chinese market are mainly supplied by production areas in Chile. European plums produced in China mainly come from Kashgar and the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang. What are the differences between plums from these production areas? People in the industry explained that the country of origin makes no difference, as long as the plums grow in fertile volcanic soil with abundant sunshine for photosynthesis.

The domestic European plums currently on the market are supplied from storage. The European plums imported from Chile, however, are fresh and their appearance and color shows that they are fresh. They feel right and the fruit is crisp. It is important to note that imported European plums from Chile are only available between January and March, while domestic European plums from Xinjiang become available in mid-summer around July and August. The current retail price of European plums in the Chinese market is around 10 yuan [1.49 USD] per 0.5 kg. The highest price for European plums is around 20 yuan [2.98 USD] per 0.5 kg. The prices in large-scale supermarkets are significantly higher than in farmer's markets.
