The report 'Consumer Trends in the Syrups & Spreads Market in India, 2011' observed that sweet spreads accounted for 46% of the market share in value terms in 2011, while jams, jellies & preserves stood next at 37% followed by syrups, and savory spreads.

In volume terms, jams, jellies & preserves held more than half of the market share, followed by sweet spreads at 37%.

The overall syrups & spreads market has been driven more by the changing age structures in the country, with close to 40% Indians citing its influence on their consumption, followed by changing lifestages.

Similar influence by both these trends was observed across all the segments, except in case of sweet spreads where fun and enjoyment stood next to changing age structures, Canadean observed.

Kids & babies in India have edged out the other age groups in syrups & spreads consumption, accounting for one fourth of the overall market value share.

The market, which is dominated by urban dwellers, has experienced higher representation from females in 2011 - who held more than 50% share in value terms.

Post-graduate Indians have led the country's syrups & spreads market with a significant 38% of value share compared to others by education level, while affluent consumers dominated other wealth groups with a prominent 48% share.

Canadean's analysis of market value by busy lives revealed that Indians having more than seven hours of leisure and those averaging one to three hours of leisure have together accounted for more than 70% share, with former leading the list.
