The Food and Drug Administration has authorized Sunland Inc. to resume operations at its Portales, N…The Food and Drug Administration has authorized Sunland Inc. to resume operations at its Portales, N.M., peanut mill, which was linked to last fall’s outbreak of Salmonella Bredeney.
Sunland’s registration was suspended on November 26, 2012, after the plant failed to satisfy F.D.A.’s expectations that existing problems were corrected. The suspension marked the first use of the F.D.A.’s authority to shut down a food facility under the F.D.A.’s Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011 (F.S.M.A.).
Sunland has been authorized to resume processing and distributing raw peanuts but must complete further corrective actions before it may manufacture and distribute ready-to-eat food.
