Red snapperIn response to increased demand for DNA testing to ensure proper seafood species identification, a new point-of-use DNA analysis kit for American red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus), one of the most frequently substituted species, will be made available in 2013.

Source To Plate, of Warminster, Pa., has partnered with TwistDx, of Cambridge, England, to introduce TwistFlow™ Red Snapper, a lateral flow detection kit that can identify an authentic red snapper sample without the need of a laboratory in less than 40 minutes. TwistDx is in the process of developing DNA analysis kits for additional species.

“This technology adds to the surveillance program Source To Plate is building and will reward legitimate seafood industry players as well as consumers,” says Edward Diehl, Ph.D., chief scientific officer of Source To Place. The company is taking pre-orders now.

Source To Plate aims to help fishermen, processors, distributors, retailers and restaurants come into compliance in advance of coming federal regulations. The company will demonstrate its new technology at the International Boston Seafood Show during the conference program “Convergence of Seafood Traceability and Species Identity Technologies — the Arrival of the New Frontier.” The conference will be held on Sunday 10 March.
