US packaging firm faces fines over health and safety violations

Fifteen serious safety and health violations include failing to create a lockout/tagout program for machines' energy sources to protect workers who are required to maintain and repair equipment and ensure the use of personal protective equipment by workers exposed to potential eye hazards while using a solution that contains ammonia.
The manufacturer of multilayer food packaging, deli bags and zipper/slider grape bags was also cited for a other-than-serious violation for failing to inspect portable fire extinguishers on a monthly basis.
"Employers are responsible for the safety and health of their workplaces and must take the necessary corrective action to eliminate hazards," said Bill Fulcher, director of OSHA's Atlanta-East Area office.
The company has 15 business days to comply with the proposed penalties, request a meeting with OSHA officials or contest the findings.
