The Center for Produce Safety (CPS) is hoping to fund $3 million for new food safety research projects in 2016.

Core produce safety research objectives include fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts; covering production, packing, processing, cooling, storage, transportation, receiving and point-of-sale environment.

CPS technical committee chair, Drew McDonald said each year the CPA attempts to identify high priority research needs.

"Over the past 6 years, this process has encouraged the Centre to invest approximately $18.2 million to fund 112 projects. The proposals need to identify ideas that meet the current expectations of the industry. They must be scientifically defensible and industry applicable."

The CPS has recently awarded 11 grants worth almost $2 million which start from 2016.
