While 95% of what Hansen Orchards packs and markets is sold domestically, feedback on the first trial shipment of Pink Lady apples to China has been good so far, with 2 sea container orders confirmed since the trial run two weeks ago. “We have a confirmed order for a sea container into China and Thailand so we are enthused by that,” says Mr Ribbon. It was not certain how well Chinese and Asian tastes would like the tartness of the Pink Lady apple, however a sophisticated marketing and branded strategy done under the Pink Lady label was supporting the cause when the shipment left, according to Mr Ribbon.

Another variety that is still in its early development is the Tiger Fuji, now in its second season. Fuji apples are known to be popular in Asia, so there is export potential there as well, according to Mr Ribbon. “Our Tiger Fuji program is in its second season and gaining some good momentum, I wouldn’t call it an established program yet but it is looking really promising,” he says. “We rolled out a branded carton for it this season which has given the apple an increased presence in Asia.”

Market prices domestically have been affected, Mr Ribbon says, but it’s nothing that can’t be overcome according to him. “This was mainly due to an over supply around the country during the harvest period however the market looks to be settling a bit now and we are starting to see some improved price.”
