E coli TollNorth Carolina State health officials are now investigating an outbreak of E. coli infection in 38 people who attended the Cleveland County Fair. Eight of those have been or are currently hospitalized, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. The outbreak also has resulted in the death of a 2-year-old Gaston County boy.

Health officials say of the 38 people infected, 22 are children and 16 are adults.

The county case counts are as follows:

Cleveland County – 18

Gaston County – 7

Lincoln County – 9

Catawba County – 1

Union County – 1

York County, South Carolina – 1

Cherokee County, South Carolina – 1
