The Bangladesh government has been asked the high court to impose a ban on the import of food treated with formalin and other poisonous chemicals.

The court also asked the government to supply testing kits to all the sea and land ports and markets throughout the nation to ensure that the chemically-treated foods are not imported.

The court has also ordered the concerned authorities to present a report by 7 January 2013, after implementing the regulation, reported Thedailystar.net.

This move by the high court comes in response to the the writ petition filed by M Helal Uddin, a director of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), on November 19. Helal Uddin had sought a ban on chemically-treated foods in order to ensure food safety.
